Let’s discuss something that affects many people. Often, they don’t realize it until their pants start getting tighter and their energy levels drop: insulin resistance.
This condition is sneaky, common, and frequently overlooked. Many individuals receive “normal” lab results but still don’t feel like themselves.
So What Is Insulin Resistance?
Think of insulin as a key. It helps sugar enter your cells to be used as energy. When your cells stop responding, sugar remains in your blood. Consequently, your pancreas works overtime, producing more insulin to compensate.
Over time, this can lead to prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. However, it doesn’t have to end that way.
Signs You Might Be Insulin Resistant
Here are some signs that people often notice, even before lab tests confirm it:
Tired all the time, especially after eating
Persistent cravings for sugar or carbs
Weight gain, particularly around the belly
Brain fog or feeling mentally “off”
Feeling hungry again just 30 minutes after a meal
Dark, velvety patches of skin (on the neck, underarms, etc.)
If this list sounds familiar, it may be time to investigate further.
Labs That Can Give You Clarity
Ask your healthcare provider to check the following:
Fasting insulin: Anything over 5 uIU/mL can be a warning sign.
Fasting glucose: A level over 100 is a significant red flag.
Hemoglobin A1c: This reflects your average blood sugar over three months. A level over 5.7 indicates prediabetes.
HOMA-IR: This formula helps assess insulin resistance.
Spoiler alert: You don’t need to wait until your A1c is borderline-diabetic to take action.
Okay, Now What?
The good news is that you can absolutely turn this around. Here’s where to start:
Walk daily: Even 10-15 minutes after meals can make a big difference.
Cut back on sugar and refined carbs: Your cells will thank you.
Focus on protein and fiber: This helps keep blood sugar steady.
Drink more water: It’s underrated!
Prioritize sleep and manage stress: These factors matter more than you think.
Next Step: Don’t Guess
